Effective Geographic Sample Size in the Presence of Spatial Autocorrelation

چکیده

As spatial autocorrelation latent in georeferenced data increases, the amount of duplicate information contained in these data also increases. This property suggests the research question asking what the number of independent observations, ay n*, is that is equivalent o the sample size, n, of a data set. This is the notion of effective sample size. Intuitively speaking, when zero spatial autocorrelation prevails, n* = n; when perfect positive spatial autocorrelation prevails in a univariate regional mean problem, n*= 1. Equations are presented for estimating n* based on the sampling distribution of a sample mean or sample correlation coefficient with the goal of obtaining some predetermined level of precision, using the following spatial statistical model specifications: (1) simultaneous autoregressive, (2) geostatistical semivariogram, and (3) spatial filter. These equations are evaluated with simulation experiments and are illustrated with selected empirical examples found in the literature.

The Effect of Divorce on Urban Housing Costs in Iran: A Spatial Autocorrelation Model

In addition to traditional factors, demographic changes also depend on factors such as marriage and divorce. Yet only a few researchers investigated the impact of divorce on housing costs. The aim of this paper is to estimate the effect of divorce on housing costs in Iran. Doing so, we have applied a fixed Panel Spatial Autocorrelation model using the data from a set of Iranian provinces over t...

Row and Column Elimination Sampling Design +1 and its Efficiencies

Extended Abstract. It is a traditional way in biological, sociological, agricultural and geological studies to partition a geographical area into quadrats and then take a sample of them by a particular sampling design. We study the relevant characteristic of quadrats to estimate a parameter of the population. We suppose that the variable of interest has a positive spatial autocorrelation. Sampl...

تغییرات مکانی تجدید حیات و تنوع گونه‌های درختی در جنگل‌‌های زاگرس، مطالعه موردی: جنگل‌‌های گهواره در استان کرمانشاه

The regeneration is one of the most important phenomena in forest ecosystems and the most important factor of development and sustainability of forests. Assessment of the regeneration is one of the best criteria for monitoring forest function stability. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial variability of regeneration diversity and its relationship with tree species diversity in ...

Spatial Autocorrelation Can Generate Stronger Correlations between Range Size and Climatic Niches Than the Biological Signal — A Demonstration Using Bird and Mammal Range Maps

Species' geographic ranges could primarily be physiological tolerances drawn in space. Alternatively, geographic ranges could be only broadly constrained by physiological climatic tolerances: there could generally be much more proximate constraints on species' ranges (dispersal limitation, biotic interactions, etc.) such that species often occupy a small and unpredictable subset of tolerable cl...
